Third Argumetative Point

There's an issue in our community, Chiang Rai, for us to share our ideas today. It was reported that local residents and environmental activists are rallying to demand a ban on the transport of lignite from a mine in Burma through Chiang Rai (Bangkok Post, published 26 August, 2010).

Up to 5,000 tonnes of lignite mined by Saraburi Coal Co, an affiliate of Italthai Public Co, which holds a lignite mining concession in Burma, would be transported daily through tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fa Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan.

The discussion aired on Thai TV last week demonstrates that villagers and activists are concerned about the project since it will have an impact on their living and environment. One person mentioned that MFU would provide them with studies and information concerning the impact.

However, it is not yet concluded whether or not MFU will have any involvement with this controversial issue. Suppose MFU decided not to get involved saying that as an academic institution, we are not going to take part in anything concerning business.

What would you argue against the decision? Keep in mind that only one interesting/strong point or reason is enough for you to voice your concern.

I disagree if Saraburi Coal Co, an affiliate of Italthai Public Co will hold a lignite mining concession in Burma by though tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fa Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan because it will destroy the air pollution and environment around there. In case that MFU overlook this problem, it is the tragedy of ChaingRai people because everything in this province will change and all of these will be bad too. MFU is the academic institution but inhabitants around MFU think that MFU has more potential to protect them and help them to resist this problem. I disagree if MFU doesn’t care the community around university and leave the community to fight with the great problem alone. It is selfish!

  3. This problem is about impact of transport of lignite from a mine in Burma through Chiang Rai. From this problem, it can effect to villager life and environment at tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fah Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan. I would like to argue that MFU should get involved to this problem. Although MFU is not business institution, it can give a lot of knowledge to villager. For the reason that MFU is the learning place that make a lot of people have the knowledge. Furthermore, MFU is located in the same place of this problem. Therefore, MFU should involve and help villager by give knowledge about the impact to them. Not only MFU can solve the problem ,but also they will proud of helping people in our community.

  6. If there would be lignite transported up to 5,000 tonnes per day through tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fa Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan, MFU should provide the villagers about the information concerning the impact of lignite’s transportation. It’s not concern about business or support the transport, but it’s about the villagers’ health problems and effects on environment in that areas. Not only MFU which have to help people in that district to prepare themselves for the impact of transportation, but also the government section that have to take care of people’s health. Because the concession take time for 30 years of transported lignite from Burma, so it exactly impact on daily life of the villagers in many ways.

  7. The transport of lignite from a mine in Burma through Chiang rai, pass many provinces and to the last that is Saraburi province. There are many Bad impacts of lignite transport such as air pollution, water pollution and so on. Bad impacts of lignite transport will effect to environment around living since Chiang rai province until Saraburi province. I think, it has disadvantage more than advantage. Mae Salong has more agriculture such as tea and so on. Tea is a famous plant of Mae Salong. If the toxic from lignite spread to the plant, it will effect to many people who consume its. We should against the transport of lignite and MFU should to support the argument of the villager and give the information or knowledge of lignite to villager because MFU is a big organization that is the center of knowledge in Chiang rai. MFU should show their stand point and fight for the best thing.

  8. This is very huge problem because it affects to people around tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fah Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan district. It doesn’t affect direct, but indirect impact to the villagers. I disagree with this point. This situation should not be occurred. Mae Fah Luang University should help to solve this problem because as every knows that the transport of lignite has destroyed the environment. Mae Fah Luang should help because we are the university which is the center of learning. We can share the knowledge to the villagers around tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fah Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan district. That is why Mae Fah Luang University should involve with this issue.

  9. I disagree with this news that up to 5,000 tonnes of lignite mined by Saraburi Coal Co would be transported daily through tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fah Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan. Because it will destroy good environment of tambom Mae Salong and pa sang; moreover, it has a seriously negative impact on the health of the people, animal, and plant in the village. I disagree with MFU said that an academic institution, we are not going to take part in anything concerning business because MFU is a big institution in Cheng-Rai, so MFU should take part in this issue and help villagers. Moreover, MFU should support villager to protect this issue, and give more knowledge about bad impacts on living things of this transportation.

  10. I totally disagree if MFU refuse to help the villagers. Because if the 5,000 tons of lignite which daily transport through Tambon Mae Salong and Tambon Pasang, it could definitely release a pollution which impact to the environment and villagers. MFU which is the biggest institute in Chiangrai should provide the information to the villagers as much as we can. Therefore, the villagers will have more information and can protect themselves from this bad situation.

  11. 12. Mae Fah Luang (MFU) will not get involved about transporting lignite from Burma through Chiang Rai because they said it is not their business. However, MFU should be involved in this issue because MFU is a university which is responsible for almost 4000 lives including students and staff. The students and staff of MFU all live in the community surrounding the university. Thus, MFU has an obligation to be concerned about that environment and how it will affect their people. In addition, parents send their children to the university trusting that MFU will look out for the students well being. These are the reasons why the MFU should be involved in the issue of transporting lignite through our community.

  13. I have argued that it is the serious problem to many people around tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fa Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan. Due to the fact that the transport of lignite, as a result; it can make environment impact such as high pollution, and crowded transportation. According to Mae Fah Luang University, the academic institution and the area where will be affected. For example, the places will be dirty, and many people will get pollution from the dust. The officials who concern; they have to make the campaign for banning the way to pass the lignite, and also give the disadvantages for villagers. Although, the transportation will make a good business, there are many effects on not only human, but also environment. Therefore, the transport of lignite should be banned.

As a result, MFU should get involve about this situation to give some important information to help or protect them from the pollution.

  15. I disagree that MFU will not support to give information to the activists about the impact of transportation of lignite. If MfU don’t support them, it will effect to the villagers in that area because that villagers may don’t have knowledge about the impact of transportation of lignite due to less education to support. Moreover, transportation of lignite may effect on health problem because the transportation of heavy lignite may effect to the road which full of dust that cause of breath problem and bad pollution. I totally disagree with the point that MFU will not offering help to solve this problem because it has tremendous effects to the natural resources, and the safety of people in various ways. Although, some people in MFU may think that they cannot help anything because the business plan of lignite transportation has been invested a lot, and it is hard to change the plan. However, there were entire people in Chiangrai against the lignite transportation. As we can see from the protesting of people, and the advertising they displayed. In the same way, it would be a very nice of MFU if they can help the society, their good image will be obtained. Moreover, the transportation of lignite will also affect to people of MFU because the location of MFU is in Chiangrai which located closely to the Mae fah luang district. This is because if there are up to 5,000 tons of lignite transportation which will be delivered through the village area, then it would harm the villagers’ health, villagers’ surrounding also villagers’ living, so people will get trouble in lignite transportation that provides the pollution and the violent sound of vehicle. I disagree that holds a lignite mining concession in Burma to Saraburi by using transported daily through tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fah Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan because lignite is contain the toxin which occur a long- term effects of the human health. The human are taking the disease from the air because the dust of lignite are mixed of the oxygen in the air that there are breathing to the body which are leading to disease as allergic, pulmonary, cancer, and death. Moreover, lignite can lead to the psychology effect because the trucks are passing of the village which contain of the loud sounds. It can lead to stress and anxiety because the people cannot sleep as well. Furthermore, I agree that MFU will have any involvement with this controversial issue because the person of local place doesn’t have a lot of knowledge, but MFU has a lot of expert that can help the people in the local place. 22. "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39).

I strongly disagree with MFU decision that “we are not going to take part in anything concerning business.” Since the lignite transportation becomes a big problem for villagers and activists in Chiang Rai Province. The villagers in Mae Salong and Pa Sang sub district are the main groups troubled. It is not only the villagers has forced, but also the environment too. For the villagers, who usually drive a car and motorcycle will face with the traffic trouble because of lignite transportation. Moreover, the terrible sound from the lignite transportation still makes annoy to people around those areas. Besides, the lignite transportation can result of bad air pollution in Chiang Rai. This evidence shows us that lignite transportation is very serious problem for everyone to handle it. Therefore, MFU should be the one who should help them from a night mare. MFU should provide knowledge about the impact of lignite and the way to protection from those impacts. According to the bible Matthew said that “you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). From this massage, I want to show you that if we love other people first, then you will receive love from other too. 23. It is true that MFU is an academic institution, the university ignore to take part in the issue about the transport of lignite from a mine in Burma through Chiang Rai. However, this issue is very complex that the villagers cannot solve this problem by themselves. They want the information and the professionals from the university to interfere with this problem because lignite can have the impact on their living, and environment. For example, the green tea can have contaminant from lignite, and the villagers have the problems of both physical and mental health. Moreover, the natural resources may destroy by lignite such as river, and tourist attraction. Therefore, MFU have the important role that give the data and support the villagers.

In my opinion MFU should offer information and help the villager to understand about the problem because MFU is an academic institution which the villager can trust. As the lignite transportation from a mine in Burma through Chiang Rai, can make many problems to the villager, such as health, annoy sound, and traffic jam. As a consequence, it can result of less travelers and environment. However, the main impact which effect to the villager is health. There are many dust coal from lignite that can make air pollution, it is directly to human health. The villagers will receive terrible air that can make problem with their breathing for everyday because of dust coal. If many trunks usually use this communication, the villager may change lifestyle for work or journey too. Also, the way of communication is not suitable for heavy trunks, so it may destroy the way of villager. While Saraburi Coal Co, receive revenue from their business, on the other hand, the people in tambon Mae Salong and tambon Pa Sang, will meet trouble from their business. 38. Some people think that MFU should not get involve with this business issue because MFU is the education institution, but concerning to long-term problems, MFU should help villagers and people who may not know their destiny in the future. Lignite transportation has an effect on many groups of people. The first is the villagers or people who have houses and farms along the road. Another group is students of MFU and other schools. The problems are health problems and accidents. For health problems, they affect people who live along the road; the dirt from the lignite cars will distract the respiratory and it can cause diseases. Foe accidents, they can be caused by the cars as well. The cars will destroy the road and many students and people usually use this road for going to school or going to down town, so the accidents may occur easily for sure. Most villagers want scholars to support their opponent in daily lignite’ transportation from Burma through tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fah luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan because villagers cannot deal with the problem by themselves. Also, MFU is the modern university which produces many efficiency students to the society. 42. It is right to say that Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) rejected to participate with the current controversial issue—lignite transportation project in Chiang Rai—as this project is a conflict of interest in business. On the other hand, since MFU is the knowledge marketplace that established by the help of local people in Chiang Rai, MFU should not ignore the local people’s issue. Thus, MFU should take a part in this controversial issue. However, MFU should have the limitations by not taking the seat as the major opponent to oppose this business project. Instead of this, MFU should take the major role providing information to the local people due to the fact that lignite transportation project causes many effects on the local people. Focusing on the lignite transportation project, lignite transportation puts effects to the local people, for instance the health of local people, the local environments, and the local traveling. Lignite transportation is a very serious problem in Chiang Rai province. When government has to transport the lignite from its mine in Burma, they have to transport the lignite pass through Chiang Rai province because this province is the city where is nearest to Burma, and easier to take method of transport lignite into Thailand. MFU, a powerful organization in Chiang Rai, has to come in force for people who live in here to against the lignite transportation because this project affect the environment in Chiang Rai. This effect is also make problem to human being in Chiang Rai. This is because we have a lot of academician who can give the information about the impacts of transportation of lignite. Not only we have to cut trees to make routes , but also the villagers have to suffer from the bad pollution from the dust. I think that because if this transport has a disadvantage on villagers in Mae Salong and Pa Sang, it will also affect MFU academic institution too. Therefore, we should not ignore this request being part of consideration of its effect.

  50. 5,000 tonnes of lignite's transportation in Mae salong and Mae chan is totally affect to villagers and MFU student in health and environment. Someone said MFU should involve with this problem. I totally agree with this because MFU is in problems' area. Our student is also got same trouble as villager. We will face the problems unavoidably. MFU should be involving this problem in terms that MFU have latency to do it, For example MFU lets villager and student know how to safe their life and their land from lignite's transportation.

  51. Mae Fah luang should provide information about this event because we should think about the effects that will happen to the villager in the long term first. For sure that many problems follow if they translate lignite mine 5,000 tonnes though tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fa Luang. The first is the environment problems, this area will full of pollution such as dust toxic fumes, sound of truck and so on. Besides, if they transport heavy things in everyday, it will damage to road of this area. The second is the health problems, if the villagers have to face the bad pollution every day, it will make mental health bad. Moreover, the bad pollution might be able to cause of some diseases. Thus, MFU should provide the knowledge of this social problem for protect their life and the environment of this area.

  52. Mae Fah Luang University should get involve with this because they are a big organization which cans help or support villager. The environment is an important thing that everybody must pay attention. If Mae Fah Luang University get involve being another voice for defense people who are destroying environment , it will be successful and can save our beautiful environment.

  53. I disagree if MFU will abandon about this problem; otherwise it causes to give impacts in the social such as cause death of labors, accident or injured, the air pollution that maybe effect in every areas like the past. However, The health of labors; allergy or skin disease that can contract to other people, the problem about raped woman like as often happen in some university that you have seen in TV and the big important is destroying environment that be unable to solve a problem. It should be clear that MFU shouldn’t neglect this problem. Therefore, MFU and people around the area must help together, responds the problem and give the knowledge and understanding to them for they will can cure themselves and cure the environment in the same time.

  55. MFU should provide the support information for the villagers to deny this project. It is all about human being because it is the duty of big organization or institute like Mah Fah Luang university to help the villagers who have to stay here in next 30 years. this project influences to villager's health and also this project will deny the environment, workplace and housing. i really disagree if MFU ignore to get involve this problem because it means this organization abandon and left the poor villagers behind Their cruel future.

  56. After I started writing this, I thought of John Lennon's song "imagine".

As an educational institute, the university must have to be involved with the issue. I see that we have to educate the local about the outcome of this project. We have to make the local stand on their two feet but do not get involve this. Still, we should educate them how bad is it going to be. The educational institute has the specific mission to accomplish, which is to empower the people to be an educated man. We only give everyone the pure wisdom. Moreover, we should not support the local by asking them to physically fight the capitalist. Instead, we have to back them by teaching what capitalism is, whatsoever is the local going to get from this blood-thirsty project. All in all, education is most essential, because as long as you are educated, you will never be fooled.

  57. Mae Fah Luang University is competent in side of educative and informative because we have many kinds of study departments. In this term, we can help the local villagers by using our knowledge to adapt each curriculum to be suitable in this transport of lignite problem. For example, we may provide the school of liberal arts to solve this problem in negotiate with mine’s owners. Another sample, our university can exploit over the mine’s companies if there will be the aspect of legalization because of we have proficient persons in school of law, which can help in case of fighting in authority. However, more intervention is can be affected in bad side to our university, which is just a educative organisation. Therefore, we should implant only idea of resolve the problem to direct concerned people. We can say that we are only the brain, which distribute solutions to the hands and legs.

  58. Concerning this controversial business issue, it is right to say that MFU should not get involve with this project in terms of being the interested person; however, I’m strongly disagree on this saying. If we concern about the long term effect on health of villagers that could be happened in the future, MFU should be a part of this project to protect the villagers’ life. There are much more pollution left behind the lignite transportation that makes people’s health the illness, particularly, skin disease. The villagers who live and do farming along the road will face with a tonne of dust for a long time, surely the skin diseases will be occurred such as acnes, itch, and prickly heat. However, MFU has a good hospital where consists of many skilled dermatologists who are ready to treat the dermatitis of those villagers. It will be the useful solutions for the villagers if MFU interferes with this project. I think the power of education from MFU can solve this problem effectively. If MFU takes part in this project, it will be a neutral solution for the both side. Specially, the villagers will receive the good suggestions from the knowledgeable people of MFU. They will not only get a good suggestion to save their health, but they also receive a good treatment for their illnesses from MFU specialists.

  60. I disagree that Mae Fah Luang University decided not to get involved in controversial issue because we are an academic institute. However, academic institution like MFU must take part in problem-solving of this issue as same as other organization because we have a lot of human resources that can provide useful knowledges to villagers about this impact. Therefore, they will realize more to environment, and press forward to controvert about this problem seriously.

  61. Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) should involve with the controversial issue about the transport of lignite from a mine in Burma through Chiang Rai because MFU is academic institution in Chiang Rai that has many efficient teacher. In addition, MFU should do research about the impact of lignite transportation in order to help the villagers in tambon Mae Sa long and tambon Pa Sang. Because of danger of the lignite transportation, it is harmful for the environment and human health in Chiang Rai. Moreover, MFU should suggest the way to solve this problem and the way to protect the villagers from the impact of transport of lignite.

  62. Need of Silent Voices

Now, there is the lignite transportation problem in Chaing Rai and local people would like Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) provide information about impact of the lignite transportation to the firm. MFU refused to do everything because MFU does not do everything that concern about business. In my opinion, MFU’s refusal is unreasonable because local people require MFU to provide information about impact of the lignite transportation that isn’t concerning in point of business. However, I would like people think about the right of speaking in the present. Democratic system allows people speak and express everything to the government and other people. On the other, when local people speak to government in something they want, their words become a silent voice. In case of lignite transportation, local people try to require MFU to provide information to the firm because they hope MFU, the knowledge institution, will be the strong voice to negotiate. Why doesn’t MFU refuse they require? They need only voice from you. Only big voice that can make their life be better.

  63. In my thought I think that Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) should be involves with this controversial issue. However, this issue is concerning about business, but the people who stay in that village them will receive the impact from transport of lignite. Moreover, this issue will concern about their living and environment that they cannot avoid in these issue if no one help them. MFU should to provide them in this issue because our university has the professional to inform the impact of issue and our university is near the village more than other organization. At least MFU should be giving the information and mentioning something that is beneficial for villager because we are academic institution, we have knowledge and we should be applying the knowledge to help the villager too.

  65. I strongly disagree that MFU will not interact about the issue; the daily transport 5000 tonnes of lignite from Burma through tambon Mae Salong in Mae Fa Luang district and tambon Pa Sang in Mae Chan. The transport exactly damages the environment, and produces the pollution. It gives bad effect on the villagers. MFU is the education center that has enough ability to do the research about this issue. MFU should pay attention to the issue to safe the villager from terrible effect from the transport of lignite.

  66. In my mind, I think MFU should decided to get involved for solve this problem. MFU should lend some help to the Chiang Rai’s people by search the information of this impact. MFU is the well-known academic institution in Chiang Rai. MFU gain many support from town folks, this is time to pay them back. So, MFU should help Chiang Rai’s peoples even though it is involved with business matter.

  67. I disagree that MFU will not help the people in area. Our campus extremely contain the excellence people and many informations to give another people. Therefore, Our campus is ready to help another, but we ignore to help. I understand that the campus don't want to involve with any business. However, this issue involve with correctness. Some groups of people in that area may agree to allow this business happen because of various results. For example, the people in area can get the job after this business happen and they have the good quality of life too. However, other groups said that they disagree to allow this business happen in area because there is the bad result such as bad health

All on above reasons, we think that our campus should interfere to help the people in this area. It may give the true and the good information to people

  68. For this problem, I think it is directly impact for villagers and also MFU in two cases. The first, transportation would make the road failed because of the weight of the trucks. The second, transportation would leave the toxic for metal on the road and air. That will cause the air pollution which impacts on the health of the people. Even though, dealing business could drive the economic, it could not make any problem for people and the environment.

  69. Some say that academic institution is only for academic people. They are right to say that. However, students and teacher gather in such academic place not just for gain knowledge, money, nor degree, but the real purpose of study is to get knowledge and use it in reality. In my opinion, there is no better chance to make benefits out of our knowledge than this ongoing environmental issue in Chiang Rai. Since the purpose is match with the opportunity, students in every school should be willing to use their knowledge to help local people understand what is going on and what ire its effects. No matter what the outcome will be, it is good enough for us to be able to apply our knowledge in reality and get experience. Just on reason above is enough for us to say that we are willing to go out and helps local people for what lies ahead is truly beyond what we could get from the book.
